Since I was a young child, I have always wanted a dog. However, my mother was allergic to dogs so I was never able to have one as a child. Once I reached adulthood, life always seemed to get in the way of taking the time to get a dog. At the age of 44, I decided that it was time that I finally get a dog before I became too old to walk one without assistance.

As a practicing attorney, research is something that is second nature to me, and I, therefore, spent considerable time researching what breed of dog would be best for me and focused on those breeds which were smaller in size, suitable for city life, intelligent, great with people, and well-suited for a novice dog owner. My research led to me to decide on a boston terrier.

Although I strongly support dog rescues, I felt that because I was a first-time dog owner that a rescue may not be the best choice for me in light of the potential challenges associated therewith. Therefore, I decided to get my boston terrier from a show dog breeder. Rudy was born on December 26, 2010, and both of his parents were notable show dog champions. He was the runt of the liter, and the only of his three other siblings who was sold as a pet with the breeder keeping his remaining siblings to compete. I purchased Rudy shortly after he was born, and I then had a long approximate three month wait until I received him at twelve weeks old on March 24, 2011. During this waiting period, I joined Woof Board, which is the leading boston terrier discussion forum on the internet (my user name is Stuart60611) where I received (and continue to receive) a vast amount of guidance on how to best prepare for and raise my new boston terrier puppy.

A great deal of attention has been paid to train Rudy and thoroughly socialize him with both people and dogs. He has turned out to be an incredible companion who is very intelligent, energetic, well-behaved, and excellent with people and dogs of all sizes and breeds. One of the greatest joys of having Rudy has been being allowed the privilege to document his life through videos which are all available for viewing on his YouTube channel. Rudy has gained quite a following on youtube, and as you can see from his videos, Rudy is quite a character. He has been and continues to be everything that I could ever hope for in a dog.

Below is a lovely story about a sweet puppy I bred to show - JeanE's Promises In The Storm - Winnie. Winnie was gorgeous but at the age of 10 months old she injured her eye and was left with a corneal scare covering 3/4 of her eye - disqualifying her for the show ring. Still a wonderful and intelligent girl, I wanted her to have the very best home out there with a family that would love her and care for her as the very special girl she is. As providence would have it, Simone and I were introduced and the rest is history. Here is her story...

Boston Terriers have been captivating my heart since the mid 90s. I find them to be the most amazing creatures. Maybe it’s their wide jackal-like smiles, or their overly expressive eyes, or perhaps I’m fond of their quirky personalities, or their ability to do hilariously fearless acts. You get the point. I love Boston Terriers.

I had two Bostons for many years and they provided me with endless entertainment, unconditional love and tenderness. In 2008 I had to put my 11-year old Sadie down, and my heart broke into a million pieces. A year later I had to send off her 14-year old brother, Quincy. What was left of my soul evaporated, and I swore off dogs.

After year of grieving and healing, I was finally able to consider getting another dog, so I started doing research. I was hoping to rescue a Boston, but it seemed nearly impossible. The good thing is they’re so popular they get rescued quickly. I started talking to a breeder in Redding who would have puppies soon, but I had my heart set on getting a rescue.

I figured it wasn’t meant to be. A week later she emailed about a friend who was looking for a home for a 3-year old female. She forwarded me to JeanE's Boston Terriers (http://www.jeanesbostons.com). I perused the website and knew I was in the right place. How could I pass up anyone with a tagline that says: Naturally Reared For Health & Beauty since 1984. Also, the pictures were perfection.

Jeannie and I emailed for about month, she was extremely diligent in her screening process, wanting to ensure her dog would be going to a safe and healthy home. When she told me about the raw food diet I backed away. How could a vegan handle raw meat? But something kept bringing us back to each other. In the end, I decided raw meat couldn’t compete with a Boston Terrier’s love. When I received the photo of little Winnie wearing her “Canine Good Citizen” ribbon, my heart grew fifteen sizes. It was love at first site.

We drove 6 hours from Los Angeles to Redding to pick up Winnie. After getting lost on the winding country roads, we finally found the location. I jumped out of the car and sprint-walked up to the house. From the porch a little black and white blur darted full-speed ahead right toward me, smiling ear to ear. Somehow this special little gal knew we would be together.

Winnie’s been in our home four months and every day gets better. She has taught me how to open my heart again. Her love is like the bright sun, lighting up our home and bringing so much laughter and joy. She is quite the character with a personality so huge, I started a website devoted to the adventures of Winnie. http://bostonterrierfanatic.blogspot.com/

I made a promise to only get future Bostons from Jeannie because Winnie is the most well-behaved, well-mannered, gentle, tender, intelligent, sweet, obedient, healthy and charming little dog I’ve ever come across. Jeannie’s website says they are dedicated to “producing healthy, sound dogs that are teachers, soulmates, bringers of daily joy, and dearest of companions.” And the proof is in the pudding, or rather, in Winnie.

Bones Not Safe For Dogs?

Today there was a blog post at www.dogshealth.com entitled No Bones About It: Bones are Unsafe for Your Dog

This is the most ludicrous statement I have ever heard made! RAW bones should be a part of every dog's diet. After all, dogs are carnivores! Yes, even Boston Terriers are carnivores and thrive on a raw meat and bone diet. I have been raising and showing Boston Terriers for over 20 years and they have been on a raw meat and bone diet the whole time!

Now, if one wants to state that COOKED bones are unsafe for our dogs then they would be correct in their statement since cooking bones (and meat) alters the molecular structure and makes bones brittle and un-digestible. Cooked bones are just as bad as the article says "bones" are, they just forgot to mention that it is only cooked bones that fit this category, RAW bones are highly nutritious for out dogs and they are designed from their teeth/jaws to their digestive tract eat, digest and utilize nutrition from bones.

Raw bones are natures's tooth brush, jaw and gum exercise equipment and trace minearl and vitamin supplement all in one.

''Mister Reusch is a freelance illustrator and teacher at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston who's done hundreds of editorial illustrations, concert posters, snowboard and helmet designs, and more. But his favorite subject is painting dogs,especially Boston Terriers. He wasn't allowed to have dogs in his old apartment, and he found himself constantly working the bug-eyed, bat-eared Bostons into his freelance assignments. Eventually, he began painting large full-color Boston Terriers for gallery shows, and donating prints and originals to worthy causes.

In 2006 Mister Reusch started a fundraising program with http://www.bostonbuddies.org, creating a series of four 14' x 11' paintings showing dogs running through the seasons; the background of each painting lines up with the others to create the illusion of one big panorama, though the background foliage changes in each according to season. Four times a year Reusch sent a signed-and-numbered print from the series to each of the first 10generous donors who pledged $100 or more to Boston Buddies.







These days Mister Reusch and his partner Carrie live with two Boston Terriers,4-year-old Frankenstein and 8-year old Mr. Giles,(pictured above) a Hurricane Katrina refugee they adopted. If he wins, the Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene will receive $50,000, plus $1 per vote.

Spanky was born 7/31/05. I have always been a yellow lab fan. My children's mother wanted to get our kids a dog. She wanted a breed that was smaller and began researching breeds. She decided that Boston Terrier might be a good choice.

She found a breeder in Sweet Home, Oregon. We had Spanky for about 3 weeks and found out from the vet that he had a heart murmur. We did not have the money to have it repaired. Each time when we took him to the vet, they commented on the murmur. I asked the kids' mother if we shared the cost, if she would agree to
let me take him to Oregon State University's Vet School to be diagnosed,
to see what we could do to help Spanky. She agreed.

I brought Spanky up there and spent an entire day. They said that he had a ductis and that surgically correcting it was the only option. They suggested going in through his leg through the femoral artery and putting a plug in to close it off. He also had an arterial valve issue that they said was not severe enough to treat. However, it caused an arterial bulge. When they went in, they inserted an
ultrasound scope down his throat to get a better look at the ductis. After three hours, they were not able to get a good enough image to deploy the blocking
devise.

They recommended that they make an incision and go in through his ribs and tie off the ductis. We OK'd them doing this. The surgeon said that it was one of the toughest ductis surgeries that she has ever done. Spanky came through the procedure with good results. He goes in in one more week to make sure that the ductis was
successfully closed off.

Spanky has become a member of our family in every sense of the world. He steals the hearts of everyone that he comes in contact with. The staff at OSU kept him in their laps when they worked, except when he was on an IV. They all just love Spanky.

Winning this contest would be such a validation of what an incredible little dog he is! He may be small in size, but he has the heart of a lion.

It is interesting to note, the cardiologist said that dogs rarely make it to two, with this condition. The fact that Spanky was 28 months old at the time, and had such good heart function, was really a miracle!

When most people come in contact with a Boston terrier they see a small, chortling, and often excitable little dog; for many of us the experience could best be described as cute, but when Erica Daking stares into the big brown eyes of her beloved dog, the connection is nothing short of inspirational.

Mighty, Daking’s 5 year old Boston terrier, is not only her precious pet and best friend but also the muse from which she draws a majority of her inspiration for her sleek and stylish fashion line- All Mighty Clothing. Daking’s designs are as adorable as the pup that inspires them. Life Is Good!

My name is Charlie and life is good! I am the only child of a couple happily married for nearly 20 years. My parents are Jon and Lori and they did extensive research prior to choosing a breed and breeder. It must have been meant to be, since when they found me I was still with my breeder at 6 months of age. We are a perfect fit! My doggie dad is Ch. Flashpoint’s Cosmic Ray, with whom some of you may be familiar.

I am rather well behaved since I had obedience training. I am only 15 lbs., so my mom can scoop me up if the need arises. She often has had to, since I am a therapy dog at the local nursing home. I need to be placed gently on many beds and laps of people in wheelchairs.

My passion in life is playing ball. I get regular sessions of fetch,
and my dad is my favorite partner for this. I have the freedom to run in my fenced in backyard when my parents are home. We belong to two Boston Terrier meet up groups so we have the pleasure of meeting other people and Boston Terriers as well. My parents have organized some indoor meet ups during the winter months, which have been great fun!

We have traveled a bit visiting family at my grandparents’ home, and have also found some lovely dog friendly hotels. I am usually a big hit wherever we go; people always think that I am sooo cute! My local grandmom and all my aunts and uncles make a big fuss over me too!

My parents have searched for all the perfect lifestyle choices for me, which include grain and potato free food. We discovered this through The Whole Dog mentioned on Little Beasts and Woof! Board, both online Boston Terrier sites. I have tried a few different foods but I do best on Rubicon Grain and Potato Free Lamb Kibble. All the choices that my parents have made for me have made my life second to none! Like I said, life is good!

Remembering Milo

Milo came into my life after a lot of research looking at many favorite breeds. I wanted someone small and smart, lively and spry. Milo fit the bill to a T. Right from the start he was different. A gentleman and a lion hearted hero. He fit right in and stole our hearts. We took him with us everywhere, whether or not dogs were allowed. After all, Milo was no ordinary dog...he stayed at some of the best hotels in the West, greeting all he met with a warm smile and eliciting a pat on the bum.

As the years went by, it became more clear that I didn't do my health research as thoroughly as I should have. Milo had a host of heartbreaking health issues that became very, very hard on him towards the end of his short life. He was allergic to many things, so I rotated his food frequently and made sure he got his allergy medications during the highest of pollen seasons. He never could eat pork or chicken without breaking out in a terrible, itchy rash.

Over the years, his back got steadily worse, with the his vet calling him Wonder Dog because he was still so spry and energetic though he clearly had serious compression of discs and some fusion going on constantly in his spine. The vet indicated that some dogs in better shape than him were already completely paralyzed. As long as we were careful, he lived very, very well. We had to limit his play time for his own good. His motto was NEVER GIVE UP! And he never complained. After more time, he couldn't jump up on the bed anymore to sleep with me. We lifted him gingerly each time he wanted up.

Milo had a great "sixth sense" for pain and trouble. Maybe because of his own condition. He would have made a fabulous therapy dog, as he liked to stay close to and comfort those in need. He would even lay by the crib when the kids were sick, or if one us wasn't well. He enjoyed his days in rehab by the side of a good friend of mine who had had a stroke. Because of his allergies, I opted not to have him trained in therapy because I just knew all of the wonderful people he would come into contact with wouldn't be able to resist sneaking him a treat that would do more harm than good.

Milo also had a special radar for cheese. He even knew how to spell it. I would sneak down to the kitchen in the night for a cheese snack when everyone was fast asleep, creeping as quietly as I could, take the "food in question" of the refrigerator quietly, slice off a piece, and look around in time to see him sitting quietly behind me, waiting his turn. Fortunately, this didn't affect him adversely.

I still see him laying in a sunny spot in the bedroom at times, snoring gently. I miss him terribly. He was an incredible little man who can never be replaced.

Please, please, do your health research with the breeder you choose; ask lots of questions and BE PATIENT. It is heartbreaking to see someone you love struggle with health issues that cause them pain. Milo died peacefully in his sleep on June 17th, 2005. We will never know exactly why. I guess it is because his soul burned so bright for others, the fire had to go out at some point to give him peace from the constant pain. He had just celebrated his 10th birthday on May 7th.

Can You Find Milo?

A Herding Boston Terrier:

Robson is a 2 year old Canadian bred Boston Terrier owned by Le-Ann Elgie, Owner/Director of Fido Can 2: Canine Consultation and Training in Pleasant Hill, CA.

Robson had previously shown extreme prey drive but had difficulty with attention, focus and excess energy. He has previously trained in obedience, rally, agility and disc sports, however, nothing ever seemed to slow him down nor completely tap his drive/energy.

Robson’s “brother”, Dash (a Cattle dog) is a herding breed, thus, Robson spent some time at the sheep farm watching his brother train. Robson always seemed very excited by the other dogs working at the sheep farm and he would watch them carefully on a weekly basis; eventually, we decided to give Robson a try on the sheep. Robson was phenomenal….he got around his sheep, demonstrating good balance and excellent instinct. After such initial success, the AHBA was contacted (American Herding Breed Association) and it was found out that “non-herding breeds” can compete in AHBA events, however, they must start at the Junior Herding Dog (JHD) level which essentially is the “second” level of competition that requires the following (as quoted from the AHBA website):
The stock (3 to 10 animals) are free-standing in the middle of the short side near the top of the arena, well off the fence. The dog may be brought in on lead, and the handler may gently guide the dog by the collar to a position within no less than 15 ft. of the stock before removing the lead. Off-lead, the dog must hold a stand, sit or down, then is released to gather and/or drive the stock.
Throughout the course, the handler may take any position relative to the stock and dog but may not touch the dog once the stock are set in motion.
The stock are taken through the panels. The handler may take the center panel either on the return from the corner panels or on the way to the corner panels (when negotiating the corner panels, the handler may choose to do either the righthand or lefthand panel first).
The stock are then taken to the pen. The dog is stopped, holding the stock in place, while the handler opens the gate to the pen. After the stock have entered, the handler must close the gate; the dog should remain outside the pen.
Course time is 8 minutes.

Robson now trains in herding, along with his brother Dash, on a weekly basis. He has most recently learned to “walk up” and he is showing great promise. It is hoped that Robson will compete in the first JHD trial offered in 2007 by the AHBA. In addition to Robson’s herding success thus far, weekly “work” on the sheep has greatly changed Robson’s attitude. He is compliant, calm, eager to please, focused and motivated to train on a daily basis. For those who do not think that Bostons can do it all, Robson demonstrates that he “begs to differ.”

Final Tag Update

Great update and news about Tag…please feel free to share it with the BRU members. Tag has found his PERFECT “forever” home and will soon be going to live with his new family. I have been very busy interviewing people and doing home visits and it was very apparent to me when I met Rick and Christine that they were meant to be his family. They are incredibly kind, compassionate and experienced boston owners.
They know and understand his limitations and have the means to provide for him should he require further expensive medical care in the future. Best of all, he adores them! (However, I am going to cry buckets when he leaves my care, I will miss his sweet smiling puppy face greeting me each morning!). And the very best news of all……Tag was seen by his specialist and he has been pronounced in great health!! The surgery was a success!!!!!! No scar tissue! (YIPPPPPEEEEEE!) He can now go on and lead a normal life, but he will always need to be monitored for blockages because of his small (but functioning!) rectum

I know that the ebay fundraiser is wrapping up and that it has been a huge success. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you, Brenda, and all of the wonderful BRU members for helping our rescue organization raise the funds to help this special little pup and the others in our care. We could not continue to help homeless boston terriers without the support of caring individuals like all of you. We have been hit particularly hard with rescues in Ontario lately, here is just a brief bio of some of the dogs in our care:
Chester, who underwent cataract surgery this past fall, still needs at least one more follow-up visit with his veterinary opthalmologist and some more medications before he can go to his forever home. Chester has been in foster care since May of 2005, and in addition to his eye surgery has also required neutering, dental work, as well as routine medical care such as shots, heartworm testing and preventative, etc. Sam, a sweet senior, suffers from Cushing's Disease, and will require medications and testing for the rest of his life. His treatments are continuing to give him a great quality of life, and he is much loved by his foster family (human and canine alike).Jessica is an extremely sweet and playful young female who suffers from a persistent skin condition that may be related to an undiagnosed autoimmune disorder. Numerous tests have been completed, and different treatments have been tried, but unfortunately this delightful girl still suffers from a painful, itchy rash that we have been unable to control. Jessica also needs to be spayed, but with her immune system down this can not yet take place. Her continued care will undoubtedly be expensive, but Rescue will do whatever we can to get her condition under control so that she can enjoy a happy life.

Eleanor Freeman, artist and owner of Pinehill Bostons has three famous Boston Terriers, soon to become even more famous!

Oreo is 7 years old. El says of Oreo, "she is my first Boston and my "heart" dog. She owns me and that's it. I have shown her in Conformation, agility and flyball. She has many agility titles and is a flyball Master excellent. Together we have driven many miles, stayed in many hotels/motels and she is the very best companion a girl could want.

Sparkler is a half sister to Oreo and is 6 years old and my diva. Basically, she does what she wants to, sometimes she is funny, sometimes she is aggravating but she is always a diva. She has been shown in conformation, agility and flyball and excelled at none of these. Now she is my most popular modeling girl because she tilts her head so cute.













Chips is Sparkle's son, he is just 2 years old. Sweet, dependable, loving with a good soul. He is being shown in conformation and has 6 points toward his championship but he really doesn't like it much. He is happiest when I take him to a children's party or senior center where he can perform his tricks.

El says it all started when a friend of hers told her about how she was making extra money with her dogs modeling and suggested that she try it. She even gave Eleanor the names of two animal agents working in NYC. Their very first job was for Target in Feb. 05. First we went down to a photo studio and Sparkler posed in a sweater looking back over her shoulder (I call it her "come hither" look.) That picture was up on the Jumbotron is Times Square the week that Westminster was in the Garden and my husband went into the city just to get a picture of it.



The following week we had to be in Bryant Park early in the morning with both Sparkler and her son Chips for Fashion Show week and in our case it was the Target dog Fashion show. The dogs got to wear a beautiful blue raincoat outfit and they were both pretty cute going down the runway. Chips was only 6 months old and a little frightened of the flashbulbs in his face. We had so much fun and decided that we would continue to do whatever jobs came our way. Since then we have done more shots for Target, a full page shot of Oreo for Real Smart magazine, Pfizer, Chicos, Anthropologie among others and Sparkle is on Project Runway tv show on Bravo TV tonight at 10:00. She and a bunch of little dogs are "the hottest accessory" according to Heidi Klune and the designers are supposed to design outfits for them and their models.

The First Boston Terrier To Earn An AKC TDX Title!

Ch. Chelestina’s Star Romancer,CD,CDX,TD,TDX (Ch. Wannaberun’s A New Hope X Ch. Chelestina’s Thistle Rose) AKA "Flynn"

This most awesome Boston boy earned his TD (AKC Tracking Dog Title) at the age of 6-1/2 months old! Just under 6 months later he finished his bench championship with a 5 point major and BOS at the Golden Gate Boston Terrier Club’s fall specialty. He then went on to earn his CD (AKC Obedience title Companion Dog) by the age of 1-1/2 years. Later, at the age of 2-1/2 years he earned both a TDX (Tracking Dog Excellent) and a CDX (Companion Dog Excellent)within 3 weeks of one another.

Flynn is the very first Boston Terrier in the history of the breed to earn the AKC TDX title.

His human mommy, Jan tells us that Flynn is currently in training to compete in agility and rally obedience, as well as continuing in obedience and tracking (VST). "

Am I thrilled with this little guy? Yes I am!! " Says Jan.

Piglet Update

Just got an email from Donna about Piglet's progress and wanted to share with you all that following her plight!.

"Piglet is getting better and better! Her vision is acceptable and the pressure is close to normal now. The conjunctaval flap (sp?) is still there and will wear away over time, so she looks downright ghoulish! I am working on house training and getting her to stop eating poop voraciously (she runs into the house with it, YUCK!).

I want to thank each and everyone who has helped Piglet with money, with prayers, and just sending her good thoughts!"

Piglet has fallen on hard times!

Piglet has fallen on hard times! She was picked up as a stray by Birmingham / Jefferson County, Alabama, Animal Control. From there, she came into rescue, where we found that she had pronounced upper respiratory infection, conjunctivitis, and whip and hook worms. While being treated for these afflictions, she managed to perforate her cornea (ouch!). This eye injury required a surgical repair, and the follow up treatment is at least a month of multiple eye drops and creams for her eye in addition to antibiotics and painkillers. To top off the suffering, she has to wear a large plastic collar (an E-collar) while she heals, lest she scratches her healing eye. Her medical bills are over $900.00 to date! If you can help out with Piglet's bills by sponsoring her, she (and we!) would be very grateful!

LittleBeasts.com & How it all started.

I often joke that Bergamot & Emrys are my muses. But it really is true. Boston Terriers seem to inspire their owners. In all the years that we have been online we have met artists, writers, web designers, clothes designers, toy designers and rescue volunteers - all inspired by Boston Terriers. Bergamot & Emrys inspired my fiance and I to create a website (or two).

LittleBeasts.com began as "The Land of Bergamot" when we got our first Boston and muse extraordinaire Bergamot Fury. That site grew to become LittleBeasts.com when little Emrys the Nemesister joined our family.

The site was created for fun & to share the goofy adventures of Bergamot & Emrys on the internet. We thought it would be fun to have a puppy cam when Bergamot was a tiny pup so that his breeder could check in on him and see him - that evolved into the Live Nude Puppy Cam! Eventually we added contests and games to the site. One of my favorites is the Photo of the Week contest. Each week a new Boston Terrier photo is featured and visitors are invited to enter captions for the photo. The contest allows me to meet many BTs and their people through their emails & photo submissions. The captions that are sent in always make us laugh. The talented people that participate in the captioning of the wonderful photos that are submitted constantly amaze me.

The website was all fun & games until we decided that Bergamot & Emrys needed to get a job! Boston Terriers have a notorious affinity for toy destruction. That gave us the idea to put Bergamot & Emrys to work testing dog toys. We thought offering dog toy reviews and ratings would be helpful for other Boston owners who were looking to buy a toy that would last more than five minutes. It was a popular section of the LittleBeasts site and as it grew we decided to expand it to its very own website called The Boston Terrier Challenge. We like to put the newest toys to the test to see just how durable & fun they are. Sometimes we find a toy that will have some staying power and sometimes we find a toy that is almost instantly a goner. Bergamot & Emrys love to test them all and we faithfully record the destruction. To be honest, sometimes the sheer joy of watching the Beasts gleefully destroy a toy is worth more than the money we spent to buy it. We know you Boston owners out there know what we mean!
